Alumni Voices: Cross-Cultural Skills for the Global Workplace

About the Event

Ever wondered why communication with people from other cultures sometimes feels confusing — even when everyone speaks English?

In this interactive lecture, Aliia, an International Business student and participant of a summer exchange program in California, shares practical lessons from studying and working in international teams.

Through real-life stories — from a Fourth of July BBQ misunderstanding to leading group projects with students from ten different countries — you’ll explore how cultural differences shape the way we communicate, collaborate, and solve conflicts.

Together we will look at how different cultures approach politeness, hierarchy, deadlines, and teamwork — and how these differences can either create tension or become a powerful advantage.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will leave with practical tools they can apply immediately in international academic or professional environments:

  • How to say “no” politely in English-speaking cultures without sounding rude or damaging relationships

  • How to work effectively in multicultural teams, balancing different communication styles and expectations

  • How cultural attitudes toward deadlines and responsibility differ across countries

  • How to write clear, professional emails to professors, managers, or international colleagues

The session will include examples, short exercises, and space for questions.
