Mentorship Program - Cycle 1

The Connexions Alumni Mentorship Program (CAMP) is designed to pair up more experienced professionals among U.S. alumni from Russia, wherever they may reside in the world, with mentees who are eager to learn, expand their networks, and develop skills that can drive positive change in their careers and communities. As a mentor, you have the opportunity to share your expertise, offer guidance, and make a lasting impact on fellow alumni. As a mentee, you gain valuable insights, set personalized goals, and build relationships that support your personal and professional journey.

Mentor Training Sessions: Building Strong Foundations for CAMP

In May and July 2025, Connexions Network hosted two foundational trainings to prepare mentors for their roles in the Connexions Alumni Mentorship Program (CAMP). On May 13, Shaz Akram, founder of HerPivot and former Deputy Director of the Fulbright Association, led an interactive session focused on building strong, supportive mentor-mentee relationships. The training addressed the goals of mentorship, the importance of setting expectations and boundaries, and how to guide mentees through active listening, feedback, and trust-building. Whether new or experienced, mentors left with practical strategies for effective, empowering engagement.

On July 1, Antonina Vinogradova, ICF-certified coach, facilitated a deep-dive training on the core principles of impactful mentorship. With two decades of coaching experience, she guided mentors through structuring sessions, setting clear agreements, and navigating common challenges. This session, full of practical value and community spirit, equipped participants with skills to support mentees with purpose and confidence.

We’re excited to see how CAMP continues to unfold and look forward to the meaningful connections.

Alumni After Hours: Alaska Adventure (NEW DATE)

Alumni After Hours:

Exploring Alaska’s Culture Through Travel and Community Stories

A Conversation with Maria Mirova

Alumni After Hours is an initiative of the Connexions Alumni Council, created to bring alumni together for informal conversations, personal stories, and shared learning. For this session, we invited Maria Mirova to talk about what inspired her recent trip to Alaska and what she discovered along the way.

Earlier this year, Maria set out to explore traces of Russian heritage in Alaska and meet the communities who help preserve local history and language. During the event, she will reflect on the experience and offer a look into the places and people she encountered.

We will learn about:

  • A summer route from Sitka to the Kenai Peninsula, visiting historical sites and speaking with local communities.

  • Encounters with residents, including descendants of Old Believer families and educators working with bilingual children.

  • A visit to a multicultural public school in Anchorage and informal conversations with teachers and students.

  • Meetings with community organizers and cultural center representatives engaged in cultural preservation work.

Maria will also share how the trip shaped her interest in documenting personal histories and working with young people on joint storytelling initiatives. One outcome is a Russian–American youth project developing a bilingual book about early explorers and historical figures connected to Alaska.

You will hear a firsthand account of an unusual journey, learn about a lesser-known chapter of Alaskan history, and explore how curiosity and community-level engagement can open space for dialogue.

About the Speaker:

Maria Mirova is a community organizer with an interest in cultural history, storytelling, and people-to-people connections. She recently participated in an exploratory trip to Alaska focused on researching local heritage and meeting community groups.

Documentary and Nonfiction Filmmaking. Workshop Series (NEW DATES)

Course Introduction

This four-part workshop series offers a practical, behind-the-scenes look at how nonfiction stories are built from the first interview question to the final edit. Participants will learn how to prepare, conduct, and shape interviews; translate raw transcripts into narrative structure; write compelling voiceover; and work confidently across visual and audio production. Each session blends hands-on techniques with real industry examples, giving emerging creators a step-by-step understanding of how documentary and news content come together.

About the Speaker

Alex Vincent Blumberg is a documentary filmmaker and writer with extensive experience shaping nonfiction stories for global audiences. He has written and produced nature documentaries narrated by Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep, and has conducted, shot, and edited hundreds of interviews with artists, scientists, public figures, and community voices. His work spans cinematic documentaries, broadcast news, and digital storytelling, offering a practical, craft-focused perspective on how strong narrative emerges from real people and real events.

Schedule

Tuesday, December 23, 21:00 MSK

Session 1: Writing for Nonfiction Filmmaking + News Content

Tuesday, December 2 | 21:00 MSK

Overview

“Documentary films are written four times. The first time is when you conceive your questions, because those questions have to lead to a narrative. You have to know that the answers of your subject are going to start piecing together the film. The second part is when you get the transcripts back. I highlight them and start to puzzle all the different bites together. Where there is a break and it needs to be redirected, you write the voiceover. That is the third part of the process. The fourth time you write is when you are in the edit bay and you look at the footage. You do it all over again. It is really about taking your subjects' voices and giving them narrative.”
Stacey Peralta, documentary filmmaker

This session introduces the foundations of nonfiction writing and how narrative is shaped across interviews, transcripts, voiceover, and the edit itself.

What We’ll Cover

  • What “writing” means in nonfiction filmmaking

  • When narration is necessary—and when the edit itself becomes the writing

  • How interview prep and interview execution shape the story

  • How transcripts become the foundation for narrative (the “paper edit”)

  • Basics of voiceover writing and writing to picture

Interview Preparation and Execution

Research

  • Finding background material on interview subjects: LinkedIn, social media, websites, publications, podcasts, previous media

  • Adapting questions to fit the subject’s expertise and communication style

Drafting Questions

  • Balancing guidance with openness

  • Writing questions that elicit both clarity and authenticity

Pre-Interviews

  • Recording pre-interviews (with permission)

  • Understanding time limits and prioritizing accordingly

Making Subjects Comfortable

  • Managing rehearsed or overly polished responses from public speakers

  • Strategies for encouraging genuine, unscripted answers

The Power of Listening

  • Creating conversational flow instead of rigid Q&A

  • Reading emotional cues and following promising threads

  • Using reflective listening: “Something you said stood out—can you elaborate?”

  • Teaching subjects to repeat the question in their answer

  • Why contextualized answers are essential for documentary editing

  • Asking for repeats when necessary

Make Me Care. A Crash Course In Telling Stories Brains Can’t Resist

Jocelyn Brady studies the wild organ in your skull—and the stories it tells to survive.

She’s the founder of Scribe, a strategic narrative consultancy, and the creator of StoryScience®, a brain-based approach to storytelling that helps people communicate with more clarity, creativity, and humanity. Her work spans global brands, think tanks, and stages—writing for CBS, developing behavior-change programs for Nike and Prudential, and training leaders, scientists and creators across five continents.
